Parent Workshops & CoursesThe team at Kurrajong Early Intervention Service includes specialists from a range of disciplines who are all keen to assist parents and children to learn, communicate and play together in the interest of healthier families and children's development. The opportunity to get to know other Mums, Dads and families and make new friends, exchange ideas, experiences and tips is an added bonus! Please contact Kurrajong Early Intervention Service for details about up and coming courses for parents. Care for Caring Parents: A course for parents, about parents! Mums and Dads of children who have disabilities or developmental delays face special challenges. One of those challenges is looking after themselves while being a carer. Running one evening per week for 6 weeks, Care for Caring Parents offers an opportunity for parents to meet other parents, share stories and ideas, as well as discuss strategies for relaxing, better communication and dealing with long term stress. Carers need caring for too! Care for Caring Parents was a huge success at our Wagga centre in June 2005, and will run at our Tumut and Temora centres in the near future. Hanen speech programs: The Hanen programs are designed to provide parents with skills that facilitate communication and language development in children who may need to learn to communicate non-verbally or are having difficulty with their language development. The Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention team has Hanen certified Speech Pathologists. Hanen 'It Takes Two to Talk': This program is designed for parents of children who are not yet communicating verbally or are communicating non-verbally (for example using gestures). Our speech pathologist meets with a group of parents weekly over the school term to assist them to learn strategies for parents to try at home to improve both the parents and the child's ability to communicate with one another. Hanen 'More than Words': This program is designed for parents of children under 6 years of age who have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, (such as Asperger's or Pervasive Developmental Disorders) or other social communication difficulties. Parents attend weekly group sessions during a school term, developing strategies and creating resources for use in the home to facilitate social and communicative development. During the course the speech pathologists conduct home visits with the parents, video recording parent-child communication strategies and providing ongoing feedback.
