Siblings Program

Being a family centred service means that no-one misses out on support. Brothers and sisters of children who have disabilities or developmental delays can face some special challenges too. Children, like adults, benefit from the support of people their age.

Often children resolve issues through play, which is children's work. 'Siblings Group' is a monthly, peer contact program for children who have a brother or sister currently accessing Kurrajong Early Intervention's service. The emphasis is on providing a fun, interactive group for children to spend time with other people aged approximately 5 to 10 years old who are in a similar situation. Children learn they're not alone in their situation; there are other kids who have a brother or sister who has special needs, and that the feelings (good and otherwise) that go with their family are OK!

Children's assessments, and much of our early intervention services, are play-based. This means that even though the child is receiving the very best therapeutic education and support to assist in their development, it can be a lot of fun too. So naturally, siblings of children in our service would like to know when they get to have a go in our purpose built gymnasium or play with all the great toys that their brother or sister enjoy!

That's why every alternate month we hold siblings group here at the Wagga Wagga Early Intervention centre, the next month we usually take the group out somewhere special. For more information about the siblings group, contact the family support unit.
