Technology

Assistive Technology provides children attending KEIS the opportunity to be more independent in their play and communication. This increases children's participation and inclusion within their current and later environments.

Providing specialised computers and programs has allowed therapists and educators to teach concepts and computer skills, allowing children to have skills many of their peers will when they start attending school. Such skills include basic and complex cause and effect, choice making and scanning.

Assistive Technology is costly and often difficult to obtain in rural areas. Having access at KEIS reduces travel to other centres to trial equipment.

The program involves:
- A specialised computer room - specialised furniture to support two computers with alternative keyboards, alternative mouses, touch screen and specialised programs.
- A laptop - with specialised programs to be used during outreach services (as part of the Rural Beginnings Program) and in Special Educator Learning Groups.
- Staff and parent have access to specialised programs for making visual aids to help their children learn language and appropriate behaviour.
- The implementation of switch adapted toys and appliances into groups and individual sessions to teach cause and effect and communication skills.
- The implementation of Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA's) across each environment a child visits. This includes assessment of skills to find the most appropriate VOCA for each child's communication needs.

Support is also provided:
- For parents and KEIS staff training regarding computer equipment, specialised programs, switches and VOCA's.
- For acquiring funding for families to provide specialised equipment for the home environment.
- For training and acquiring funding for resources for children's Preschools, Child Care Centres and Early Intervention Support Class.

The KEIS team also consults with other services including the Spastic Centre, Northcott's Computer Assistive Technology Services (CATS) team, Spectronics and Technical Solutions.

Please Note: KEIS do not sell equipment.
