Team Around the Child

The book 'Team around the Child' has received high praise from an international expert in early childhood intervention, Professor Barry Carpenter, from the United Kingdom. He said 'The bookbrings together in practical and accessible ways all of the current major theories surrounding early childhood intervention and merges them into a dynamic framework for practice'.

The book has been written by Sue Davies, Manager of Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention Service, and members of the Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention team who together have a wide range of experience and expertise. Our team consists of speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, past educators and family support workers. Family centred, transdisciplinary team work with the 'Team Around the Child' concept developed by Peter Limbrick of the UK, is the basis of the innovative, dynamic service delivery model developed by Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention Service.

This book was developed as part of the Rural Beginnings Project. Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention Service was one of only 23 programs that were successful in obtaining a grant under the Australian Government's Early Childhood - Invest to Grow initiative to operate the Rural Beginnings Project. The Rural Beginnings Project has allowed Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention Service to expand and develop their established model of early childhood intervention to rural areas around Wagga Wagga. The project and the book also addresses the difficult problem of recruitment and retention of therapists to country areas through the use of a 'hub and spoke' structure which is an integral part of the Rural Beginnings Project.

One of the main aims of the Invest to Grow Program is to expand the evidence base of what works in early childhood intervention and to develop tools or resources to support other early childhood intervention services. The 'Team Around the Child: Working together in early childhood intervention' book is designed to support other early childhood intervention professionals, particularly those professionals operating in rural and isolated areas throughout Australia. An assessment tool which is included on a disc as part of the book has been developed through the Rural Beginnings Project. This book will allow other professionals and services to take the information and work that Kurrajong Early Childhood Intervention Service has found to be successful and incorporate it into their own service and practice.

This book has the potential to be a timely catalyst in the field of early childhood intervention with the aim of making a difference, not only for early childhood intervention regionally, but Australia wide.
